Congenital Defects of the Urinary Tract (CAKUT)

Long-term monitoring of structural kidney and urinary anomalies from birth.

Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract (CAKUT) represent the single leading cause of chronic kidney impairment in children worldwide. Many are identified during routine pregnancy anomaly scans (antenatal hydronephrosis) and require structured postnatal clinical follow-up.

Common Symptoms & When to Consult

Signs and clinical presentations evaluated by our pediatric team

Antenatally detected fetal hydronephrosis or renal pelvic dilatation on pregnancy scans
Palpable abdominal lump or mass discovered during newborn check-up
Poor urinary stream or dribbling in infant boys (suggestive of Posterior Urethral Valves)
Early infantile recurrent urinary infections
Single functioning kidney discovered incidentally

Diagnostic Workup & Clinical Evaluation

Precision testing protocols avoiding unnecessary invasive tests

1

Timing-controlled postnatal KUB ultrasound (avoiding false negatives during early newborn dehydration)

2

Micturating Cystourethrogram (MCU) to evaluate Posterior Urethral Valves (PUV) and Vesicoureteral Reflux

3

Nuclear medicine renogram (MAG-3 / DTPA with Lasix) to differentiate obstruction from benign dilatation

4

DMSA scan to evaluate differential renal functional contribution

Treatment & Therapeutic Protocols

Evidence-based, child-safe management strategies

Conservative non-surgical surveillance for mild-to-moderate non-obstructive hydronephrosis

Long-term medical preservation protocols for children with solitary functioning kidneys

Coordinated surgical management with pediatric urologists for pyeloplasty or valve ablation

Annual growth surveillance, microalbuminuria screening, and blood pressure monitoring

The Pravas Care Guarantee

Physician's Clinical Perspective
“Over 70% of mild antenatal hydronephrosis cases resolve completely on their own without surgery when monitored systematically under specialist care.”

Frequently Asked Questions

My pregnancy scan showed fetal hydronephrosis. Does my baby need immediate surgery?

In the majority of cases, no. Most antenatal hydronephrosis is mild or transient. We perform an ultrasound after the first week of life to evaluate the kidney and usually manage it conservatively without surgery.

Can a child lead a normal life with only one kidney?

Yes, absolutely. A single healthy kidney grows larger to perform the work of two. With regular blood pressure checks, avoiding nephrotoxic painkillers, and good hydration, single-kidney children lead completely normal, active lives.
